Northern Ghana Model United Nations (NOGMUN) was founded to bridge the gap in access to leadership, diplomacy, and global education opportunities for young people in Northern Ghana and the world at large. While many students in major cities have access to Model United Nations conferences, leadership training, and international engagement, thousands of talented young people in Northern Ghana have limited opportunities to develop these skills.

The idea for NOGMUN was born from the founder's personal journey. Growing up in Northern Ghana, Mariam Maame Asantewaa Kwapong witnessed firsthand the immense potential of young people in the region. However, she also recognized that many students lacked exposure to platforms that build confidence, public speaking, negotiation, policy analysis, and international awareness.

As Mariam advanced in her own academic and leadership journey—participating in Model United Nations conferences, representing countries in diplomatic simulations, earning international recognition, and engaging in youth leadership initiatives—she realized how transformative these experiences could be. They opened doors to scholarships, global networks, career opportunities, and lifelong leadership skills.

She believed that students from Northern Ghana deserve the same opportunities.

NOGMUN was therefore established as more than an annual conference. It is a youth leadership movement dedicated to nurturing the next generation of diplomats, policymakers, entrepreneurs, advocates, and community leaders. Through Model United Nations conferences, leadership academies, policy competitions, mentorship, school outreach, and community impact projects, NOGMUN seeks to equip young people with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to become active citizens and leaders both locally and globally.

The organization is committed to promoting the values of diplomacy, peacebuilding, critical thinking, sustainable development, inclusion, and civic responsibility. It also aims to create opportunities for students from underserved communities to connect with national and international institutions, preparing them to compete on the global stage.

Although NOGMUN begins in Northern Ghana, its vision extends beyond regional boundaries. The organization aspires to become one of West Africa's leading youth diplomacy platforms, bringing together students from across Ghana, Africa, and the international community to collaborate on solutions to global challenges while empowering young leaders to shape a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable future.
